Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve

3.jpg

This experience offers insight into the living culture and heritage of the Six Nations of the Grand River, the largest Indigenous reserve in Canada by population and a place of exceptional historical significance. Unique in North America, it is the only reserve where members of all six Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Nations—the Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Seneca, and Tuscarora—live together. The day combines cultural context, historic locations, and scenic landscapes, with additional time in the nearby communities of Brantford and Caledonia.

A highlight of the day is a two-and-a-half-hour cruise on the Grand River, featuring a freshly prepared three-course lunch served on board. The stretch of river between Brantford and Caledonia is among the most scenic, with wooded riverbanks, open meadows, and a calm, unhurried atmosphere. Throughout the cruise, the captain provides informative commentary on the river’s history and its importance to Indigenous communities and early settlement. Between courses, tourists may relax on the open deck, enjoy a coffee or cocktail, and take in the natural beauty of the Grand River as it flows through one of southern Ontario’s most historically significant landscapes.

The tour concludes with a relaxed return, leaving tourists with a deeper appreciation of Indigenous history, river culture, and the enduring connection between land, water, and community.
