Journey Through Ontario's Tobacco Belt

These itinerary traces the agricultural history of Ontario’s Tobacco Belt, a region that has shaped rural life in Norfolk County and eastern Elgin County for generations. Historically significant, the area has produced approximately 90 percent of Canada’s tobacco and has played an important role in the development of farming traditions in southern Ontario.
The day begins in the town of Delhi with a visit to the Tobacco Museum and Cultural Heritage Centre, located on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside. The museum features an extensive agricultural collection dedicated to tobacco, ginseng, and other alternative crops cultivated in the region. Through exhibits and displays, tourists gain insight into the area’s farming history, evolving agricultural practices, and rural heritage.
The journey continues to the picturesque lakeside town of Port Dover, situated on the shores of Lake Erie. Tourists have time to stroll along the lively waterfront promenade, featuring a pier, sandy beach, and distinctive palm trees. The town’s inviting atmosphere includes boutiques, art galleries, cafés, and restaurants, as well as the peaceful green spaces of Powell Park. A visit to the Port Dover Harbour Museum offers insight into the town’s maritime history, with exhibits covering the War of 1812, shipbuilding, commercial fishing, and shipwrecks on Lake Erie.
In the afternoon, tourists enjoy a relaxing pontoon cruise on the Lynn River. The route passes the local museum, glides beneath a historic bridge, and continues into the Black Creek Nature Reserve. The calm, narrow river flows gently toward Lake Erie and is lined with waterfront homes featuring manicured lawns, sculptures, private docks, and moored boats, creating a peaceful and scenic experience.
The tour concludes with a visit to Whistling Gardens, one of Ontario’s most celebrated and award-winning botanical gardens. The gardens feature North America’s largest peony collection, along with nearly 8,000 perennials and more than 400 varieties of irises. Whistling Gardens is also known for its exceptional conifer collection, with over 1,800 varieties displayed across 20 acres. Tourists may explore the aviary, home to species such as mute swans, Egyptian geese, and heritage chickens. The visit ends with one of the garden’s signature attractions—a computerized musical fountain show, among the largest in Canada, providing a memorable finale to the day.
